WASHINGTON, D. C. – Today, the National Bankers Association released the following statement regarding the Securities and Exchange Commission’s announcement of the appointment of Erica Y. Williams as Chairperson to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.
“The National Bankers Association (NBA) is delighted with SEC Chairman Gensler’s choice of Ms. Erica Y. Williams for the position of Chair of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). Ms. Williams brings a breadth of litigation, regulatory, and policy experience; and with her background in public accounting, she is a superb choice to lead this critical agency. The NBA understands that many of the nascent investors in public companies are often non-traditional investors, many of whom are Black, women, or fall into other classes with very little experience in investing. We believe that Ms. Williams brings an understanding and appreciation of the complexities of corporate finance, accounting, and taxation to her work that gives our member banks the confidence to support her appointment.
Ms. Williams has experience leading enforcement investigations and litigation involving complex financial disclosure matters and accounting; rule writing and examinations; advising on policy; and managing legal and operational matters at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), making her an ideal candidate for Chairperson. In addition, we believe that Ms. Williams experience in Washington provides her with the gravitas to lead an organization as critical as the PCAOB.”
