A Letter from NBA & Fiserv: Our Research on MDI Banks’ Community & Employment Impact
We are pleased to present this research report, produced through a collaborative initiative of the National Bankers Association and Fiserv, in partnership with Lunum. Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs) play a vital role in advancing economic mobility, expanding financial inclusion, and strengthening community resilience across the United States. This research was conducted to better understand the employment practices and community impact of MDIs, and to make those contributions more visible to the broader financial sector.
Drawing on data from 11 participating Member MDIs, and one emerging MDI, this report offers a representative view of the sector’s workforce and community impact. By examining core dimensions such as wages, employee well-being, and workforce stability, the findings illuminate both the sector’s strengths and opportunities for growth, reinforcing the importance of MDIs as models of inclusive, mission-driven banking.
This research reflects both quantitative analysis and the perspectives of MDI leaders themselves. Together, these insights help define a shared vision for the sector’s future, one that builds on its history of purpose-driven service while charting new pathways for systemic change. We invite you to explore the findings, engage in the conversation, and join us in shaping what comes next.
