ABA and National Bankers Association Announce New Partnership to Serve Minority Depository Institutions

WASHINGTON —

The American Bankers Association and the National Bankers Association today announced a new series of semiannual MDI partnership summits designed to connect midsize and regional banks with minority depository institutions (MDIs) across the United States. Sponsored by ABA’s Minority Depository Institutions Advisory Council (MDIAC), the summits will begin in 2023 and will be held during an ABA spring meeting and an NBA fall meeting each year. This initiative builds on ABA and NBA’s existing strategic partnership first announced in 2020.

“MDIs are a critical part of the banking industry and an important source of capital for small businesses and minority communities across the U.S.,” said Rob Nichols, ABA president and CEO. “These institutions play a key role in expanding economic opportunities for a wide range of Americans, and these summits will give banks of all sizes the opportunity to support and partner with MDIs and help expand their impact.”

“We appreciate ABA’s strong support of both the NBA and MDI community as a whole,” said Nicole Elam,  president and CEO of the National Bankers Association. “We are excited to collaborate on these events and explore the incredible potential for partnerships between MDIs and their peers around the nation.”

ABA has a large and broad constituency of MDIs within its membership ranks, representing Latinae/Hispanic, Native American, Black and Asian-Pacific Islander owned and operated banks. ABA’s MDIAC engages these member banks and provides focused support to these important institutions.“It is an honor to launch this critically important initiative,” said Bryan Luke, president & CEO, Hawaii National Bank and the inaugural chair of the MDIAC. “We are confident this partnership will help create jobs, grow small businesses and improve access to capital for individuals in communities of color across the country.”
