Credit in Indian Country:
A Snapshot of Native MDI Bank Borrowers
MDIs play a vital role in supporting local economies through relationship-focused lending. Building on prior research linking MDI presence to better credit health, this report examines the credit outcomes of Native American MDI borrowers compared with similar mainstream borrowers.
Total Credit Line, Excluding Mortgages and Home Equity

Description

Every day mission-driven community banks, or minority depository institutions (MDIs), quietly provide the capital and credit that anchor their local economies. A few of these banks have grown into leading regional institutions, but most MDIs remain small and relationship-focused – an increasingly rare type of bank in an industry dominated by consolidation and scale.

In previous research leveraging TransUnion credit data, we found that MDI presence is positively associated with better credit health. This report extends our TransUnion partnership to look specifically at an anonymized subset of Native American MDIs, comparing the credit health of thousands of Native MDI borrowers relative to a control group of similar mainstream financial institution borrowers.
